The Certificate in African Studies provides students with valuable knowledge about Africa and various aspects of life on the continent. The Certificate is recommended to students wishing to gain international perspectives before entering the global marketplace. The courses offered through the program cover a variety of disciplines to ensure that the Certificate lends itself to any major area of study.It is not necessary to study abroad to earn the Certificate, but credit towards the Certificate can be earned by studying abroad (in Ghana, Kenya, Morocco, Tanzania, or South Africa). Limited scholarship funds are available to cover the cost of traveling. In order to earn the Certificate in African Studies, students must complete 17 credit hours from the list below of courses endorsed by the African Studies Institute. These hours must be completed as 3 hours of credit for the compulsory course (AFST 2100: Introduction to Africa); 11 hours of credit or three semesters of study in an African language (offered at UGA); and 3 hours of an elective course with African content.The Certificate is awarded every spring. Application for the award of the certificate and the review of course work is due on the last day of classes every FALL semester. Students with late applications will be reviewed and considered for the award in the following school year.
